Structural retaining walls can be built out of various materials including

• Boulder walls
• Besser Blocks
• Interlocking dry stack walls
• Brick(face render bagged)
• Common walls with stone faced flagging
• Treated pine timber

Engineer plans should be drawn up for walls over 1 meter to ensure structural integrity.  If so work is carried out to the plans specifications.  Concrete footings are poured with steel bars incorporated for strength.
